Knee Injury Sidelines Pistons’ Wallace

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 23 (AP) -- Detroit forward Rasheed Wallace missed the Pistons' game against Philadelphia on Friday night with a sore left knee.

Wallace tweaked the knee Nov. 11 at Seattle, then sat out the second half of Wednesday's 98-86 win over the Knicks. He underwent X-rays Friday, and coach Flip Saunders said the tests showed "everything was structurally fine.''

Jason Maxiell started in place of Wallace, who's averaging 15.2 points and 7.1 rebounds in 11 games this season.

Van Gundy Downplays Heat-Magic Rivalry

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 23 (AP) -- Stan Van Gundy knows the Miami Heat better than almost anyone. He worked there under Pat Riley for 12 years, improved the team by 34 wins in two seasons as head coach and barely missed an NBA championship appearance.

He even stayed after Riley retook the reins and won it all.

But now Van Gundy is coaching the Heat's Southeast Division rival Orlando Magic, and his former mentor is in the way. The two compete in the regular season for the first time Saturday, though Van Gundy says it doesn't feel different.

"When we played them in the exhibition season, it was nice to see some of the guys I worked with and kind of wave at them, but there were no real emotions there,'' he said.

Van Gundy learned at Riley's knee, serving six years as top assistant before getting the chance to be head coach of Miami in 2003, while Riley continued as Heat president. He lasted just over two seasons before resigning 21 games into 2005-06, when Riley returned to the sideline.

Both sides insist the decision was mutual, and Van Gundy hasn't wavered on the issue since leaving the Heat. But it was a peculiar parting - at 112-73, he is still has the franchise's best winning percentage.

Their teams now are headed in opposite directions. Orlando's acquisition of Rashard Lewis and Van Gundy's freewheeling, up-tempo style have quickly turned it into an Eastern Conference contender. The Magic handed Boston its first loss of the season, and have won consistently on the road and hold a comfortable Southeast Division lead.

Meanwhile, Riley's Heat are at the bottom. The franchise suffered its first winless preseason, and didn't get much better when games started to count. With Dwyane Wade recuperating from offseason shoulder and knee surgery, Miami dropped its first five. It got so bad that after a 91-76 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, Riley suggested he suit up.

Jermaine O’Neal to Miss Game Against Dallas

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 23 (AP) -- Indiana Pacers forward Jermaine O'Neal will sit out Friday's game against the Dallas Mavericks with swelling in his left knee and lower leg.

The six-time All-Star missed Wednesday's 105-93 victory in New Orleans. The timetable for his return is uncertain.

"If it takes shutting him down a couple days to get him right, we'll do that,'' coach Jim O'Brien told Pacers.com after practice Thursday.

It will be the 85th regular-season game O'Neal has missed in just over three seasons.

O'Neal had offseason surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his left knee that hobbled him during the final two months of last season. He hurt the knee again on Oct. 8 during a practice, and later hyperextended it.

He's averaging 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds while shooting just .388 from the field, all below his career averages.

Steve Nash's MVP Workout

One of the prevalent knocks on Steve Nash by critics is that as an athlete, he is considered ordinary. Unfortunately for them, that assessment is "extra-ordinarily" misguided.

While Nash may not be the type of point guard who throws down alley-oops or sets bench-press records, the two-time MVP possesses certain physical attributes that could be considered even more exceptional. Balance, core strength, eye-hand coordination and the ability to change speed and direction quickly – while often unappreciated – are vital components of the elite athlete.

Like all sports greats, the complete game that Nash exhibits to Suns fans on a nightly basis is the result of a limitless amount of work. What distinguishes Nash from other athletes with an insatiable work ethic is his ability to not only work hard, but to work smart.

On PBS’ Charlie Rose Show over the summer, Nash talked about how he designed his game around the natural talents that he possesses. His one-legged running floaters, body-contorting passes and lane-carving penetrations are the result of an analysis of how he could be most effective. However, in order to complete those plays and moves, he needs to possess the balance, quickness and flexibility to perform them. He also had to have the endurance to sustain an intense pace for over 35 minutes a game.

Utah Jazz: Williams, Paul Meet Again

It was a painful Thanksgiving night for Deron Williams.
First, Williams watched the Utah Jazz practice, sitting out as a precaution while recuperating from having an ingrown toenail removed early in the week.
Second, Williams had to face the latest round of questions about his rivalry with Chris Paul, whose New Orleans Hornets visit EnergySolutions Arena tonight.
Judging from Williams' expression, the inquiries about Paul were far more painful than his sliced-and-diced toe.
Asked if he was tired of questions about the on-court rivalry between the two young point guards, Williams said, "Yup. You know I am. I'm sure he is, too."
Because he was the No. 3 pick in the 2005 draft - one spot ahead of Paul - Williams was asked if he feels the two players will share a unique link as long as they toil in the NBA.
"Pretty much," Williams said, "because [the media] won't let it go."
Of course, there's another reason behind the ongoing fascination over the Williams-Paul relationship.
Both are emerging All-Stars who, along with No. 5 pick Raymond Felton, eventually could make their draft one of the best in history for point guards.
