Sonics' Watson Dedicates Himself To Health

Seeking to eliminate complacency as his career reaches its midpoint, Earl Watson decided to rededicate himself to basketball by rededicating himself to himself.

His lackadaisical attitude toward his health was exemplified by consistent trips to Sprinkles Cupcakes, a Beverly Hills goody store that Watson frequented during this summer.

Sprinkles is emerging as the new Krispy Kreme, with the line of customers 30 deep waiting when it opens at 10 a.m.

Watson started by picking up a couple of cakes, munching on them over a span of a few days, nothing serious. But when he hosted a get-together for several friends, Watson decided to purchase two dozen cupcakes and ended up eating most of them himself.

A routine weigh-in brought shocking results.

Those cupcakes, combined with taking extra time off to heal a badly sprained ankle suffered in the final week of the season, added 10 unwanted pounds to Watson's slight frame.

"I said, 'This has to change, I can't eat like this anymore,' " he said.

"I want to live a long time after basketball, and I had to make some changes. I was used to eating anything I wanted, but I decided I wanted to just feel better overall."

Watson hired a chef and began practicing Pilates, an exercise method that trains the mind to control the muscles. Several celebrities have used Pilates to prevent back discomfort or as a form of meditation.

As a bachelor and not much of a cook, Watson's diet used to consist of whatever his appetite desired. He didn't discriminate and his wiry frame never added weight.

But the change in eating habits, in addition to a new workout regimen, has shown Watson how much he had been neglecting his health.

Point Guard And Center Up For Grabs

HONOLULU -- Help wanted: two positions.

Short of hanging out a shingle, Lakers Coach Phil Jackson has thrown open a pair of training-camp battles, one a four-man race at point guard, the other a three-man race at center.

Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown and Andrew Bynum will be fighting to start in the middle, and Javaris Crittenton, Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic are trying to wrestle minutes from Derek Fisher at one of the guard spots.

Bynum has looked better on defense with his rebounding and shot-blocking so far, while Mihm has survived his first practices in almost 17 months after sitting out last season because of ankle surgery. Brown is not doing contact drills for at least a week, but he also figures into the mix as the Oct. 30 opener gets closer.

Arenas Ready After Tough Offseason

Real or perceived, tangible or not, slights lurk around every corner for the Washington Wizards' All-Star guard. No matter his accolades, Arenas seems to seek, gather and, yes, cherish affronts, precisely the way he collects autographed NBA jerseys - and he owns hundreds of those, from all sorts of players and eras.

Stop him for a few questions after a training camp practice, and out slides a mention of how that very morning he was reading one person's preseason ranking of top NBA players and was shocked - shocked! - to find himself down at No. 20.

"Duncan's No. 1, Kobe's No. 2. Then they've got all them bums in front of me,'' Arenas said this week, a can-you-believe-it? tone in his voice and mischief in his eyes. "I'm 20; I feel I'm in the top five. There's motivation right there.''

Typical Gil, Wizards coach Eddie Jordan or teammates might say, and they might even laugh or roll their eyes. What they - and fans - are not as accustomed to is Arenas' questioning himself, being the very source of the sort of underestimation that drives the guy.

Yet that is precisely what Arenas did in the weeks right after last season ended prematurely, after he tore up his left knee during a game in April. What he did as he began the arduous workouts needed to return from surgery. What he did knowing full well how crucial that knee is to what he does and what he loves.

Lamar Odom Hopes To Finish Career With Lakers

HONOLULU, Oct. 4 (AP) -- Lamar Odom did his best to ignore the offseason trade talk.
There was no way, because it never went away.

The versatile 6-foot-10 forward, who has shown an ability to play everywhere on the court during a productive eight-year NBA career, professes to be a glass half-full person.
But, he acknowledged Thursday, the rumors did hurt.

"It bothers you a little bit, especially when you thought you'd proven yourself to be worthy of being here,'' said Odom, about to begin his fourth season with the Los Angeles Lakers - assuming he's not moved before the end of the month.

"Of course it bothers you, especially when you're in a place where you want to be,'' he said. "But this is a business. If you worked for a law firm based in St. Louis, Missouri, and you loved St. Louis, and somebody said the firm was moving to Austin, Texas, you wouldn't want to go.''

Odom, who turns 28 next month, was reportedly part of a package offered to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett, and was also mentioned in connection with a potential deal involving Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal.

Nothing happened.

"(Trade talk) happens because I can play,'' Odom said. "Sometimes, you take it as a compliment, but this is where I want to play basketball for the rest of my career. This is where I want to win championships. Hopefully, I can go out there and play at a high level and it will happen.

"Hopefully this is the last stop for Mr. Odom.''

Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who called for an upgraded roster during the offseason, expressed the opinion that trade rumors are part of the game.

KINGS HIRE LAFAYETTE “FAT” LEVER AS

SACRAMENTO, CA, Thursday, October 4, 2007 --- The Sacramento Kings today hired Lafayette “Fat” Lever as Director of Player Development, it was announced by Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.

Lever, who owns and operates a construction business in Phoenix, has been involved over the past several years with NBA-based programs such as NBA Cares and Legends of Basketball.

“We’re really excited to have Fat join our staff,” said Petrie. “He had an outstanding career in the NBA. He’s worked with the NBA Cares program and he’s been involved with the community in Phoenix. We think he brings a lot of qualities which will contribute to improving our players’ overall experience in the NBA and life.”

An 11-year NBA veteran, Lever, who was originally selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1982 NBA Draft (11th overall) out of the Arizona State, was considered one of the league’s best point guards in the late 80’s while playing for the Denver Nuggets.

“I’m excited about the opportunity,” explained Lever. “I’m confident in the position. I’ve worked in this capacity before, and I know what I’m doing. I’m not overly confident, but I’m confidently optimistic.”

Lever played two years for the Trail Blazers before being traded to Denver prior to the beginning of the 1984-85 season. He enjoyed a six-year career with the Nuggets in which he finished as the franchise’s leader in all-time steals and second in career assists. Lever’s best year, statistically, occurred during the 1988-89 campaign when he averaged 19.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game for Denver.

Lever’s last three NBA seasons were spent playing for the Dallas Mavericks (1990-92 and 1993-94). He amassed career averages of 13.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.22 steals per game in 752 outings. Lever is one of only three players in NBA history to record 15-plus points, rebounds and assists in a single playoff game (the others being Jason Kidd and Wilt Chamberlain). He played in two NBA All-Star Games (1988 and 1990) and was selected to the All-NBA Second Team in 1987 and All-Defensive Second Team in 1988.
