Seeking to eliminate complacency as his career reaches its midpoint, Earl Watson decided to rededicate himself to basketball by rededicating himself to himself.
His lackadaisical attitude toward his health was exemplified by consistent trips to Sprinkles Cupcakes, a Beverly Hills goody store that Watson frequented during this summer.
Sprinkles is emerging as the new Krispy Kreme, with the line of customers 30 deep waiting when it opens at 10 a.m.
Watson started by picking up a couple of cakes, munching on them over a span of a few days, nothing serious. But when he hosted a get-together for several friends, Watson decided to purchase two dozen cupcakes and ended up eating most of them himself.
A routine weigh-in brought shocking results.
Those cupcakes, combined with taking extra time off to heal a badly sprained ankle suffered in the final week of the season, added 10 unwanted pounds to Watson's slight frame.
"I said, 'This has to change, I can't eat like this anymore,' " he said."I want to live a long time after basketball, and I had to make some changes. I was used to eating anything I wanted, but I decided I wanted to just feel better overall."
Watson hired a chef and began practicing Pilates, an exercise method that trains the mind to control the muscles. Several celebrities have used Pilates to prevent back discomfort or as a form of meditation.
As a bachelor and not much of a cook, Watson's diet used to consist of whatever his appetite desired. He didn't discriminate and his wiry frame never added weight.
But the change in eating habits, in addition to a new workout regimen, has shown Watson how much he had been neglecting his health.
