Celtics, Posey Agree To Terms

The Celtics agreed to terms with free agent small forward James Posey yesterday on a $7 million, two-year deal, with the second year a player option. Posey should arrive in Boston tomorrow or Tuesday to sign officially, according to his agent, Mark Bartelstein.

Posey spent the last last two seasons of an eight-year career with the Miami Heat. He averaged 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds and started 63 of 67 games during the 2005-06 season, when the Heat won the NBA title.

As a player who knows what it takes to win a title, the 6-foot-8-inch Posey was particularly attractive to the Celtics. Career averages of 9.5 points and 4.9 rebounds, in addition to his standout defensive ability, helped convince the Celtics that Posey was worth spending the midlevel exception.

"He's going to add a lot to the Celtics," said Bartelstein. "He's one of the premier defenders in the league at the wing position. He can be a lock-down defender every night.

"He didn't get to show all he can do offensively [with Miami] because of Shaq [O'Neal] and Dwyane Wade. In Doc [Rivers]'s offense, I think he'll get a lot of opportunities. He is a high-energy, tough-minded guy who plays his heart out every night."

The news on Posey comes less than 48 hours after Reggie Miller declined a comeback offer with Boston. If second-round picks Glen Davis and Gabe Pruitt sign in the next few days, as expected, the number of players under contract with the Celtics will increase to 15 with little more than a month until the start of preseason.

Raps Say Garbajosa Can't Play For Spain

The Raptors have ruled forward Jorge Garbajosa out of playing for Spain at the upcoming EuroBasket tournament, the club announced yesterday.

"Despite Jorge feeling and looking ready to play, the medical findings suggest otherwise," Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said in a statement.

Garbajosa suffered a broken fibula and torn ankle ligaments during a Raptors game in Boston in March.

The Raptors said Garbajosa was recently evaluated in Toronto by Raptors medical, training and coaching staffs, and was able to perform on-court drills proficiently and without pain. But a detailed review and assessment of the various images and scans taken have revealed insufficient healing of the fractured fibula.

Combined with the inability to obtain adequate insurance coverage, the Raptors would not consent to Garbajosa's participation in the upcoming European Championships, Sept. 3-16 in Spain.

Posey Likely Leaving HEAT For Better Offer

It looks like James Posey found some free-agent offers he likes better than the Heat's.

The agent for Posey said Friday that the forward was close to signing with another team, which would end Posey's Heat tenure after two seasons and leave the Heat thin at small forward.

Agent Mark Bartelstein declined to name the two teams vying to sign Posey but said a return to the Heat wasn't among the likely options.

"I don't want to get into the teams, but I expect something to get done later [Friday] or [Saturday]," Bartelstein said.

Heat coach Pat Riley said earlier this week that the team had extended an offer to Posey that he characterized as "the best offer out on the market." Riley added that team owner Micky Arison, already paying more than $1 million in luxury taxes, is unwilling to add major payroll unless it's a "significant asset to help us win, not a role player."

Griz's Miller Knows Role For USA

LAS VEGAS -- Mike Miller has won an international gold medal, but he is hungry for another.

During the 2001 Goodwill games in Brisbane, Australia, Miller was 21 and fresh off winning the NBA's Rookie of the Year award. Six years later, Miller is the lone returnee from those Goodwill Games and is doing what he knows best for Team USA in its Olympic qualifier, the FIBA Americas Championship: shooting.

"I know my role is going to be coming off the bench, but when I'm in there I want to play with intensity and, when I get the ball, to hit my shots," Miller said.

Alongside Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Jason Kidd and so many other NBA All-Stars, Miller might seem like the odd man out when it comes to getting the floor time he's used to as a guard for the Grizzlies.

Team USA's opening game against Venezuela provided little competition in a 112-69 victory. With high-flying dunks by Amare Stoudamire and the triple threat of Bryant, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, the United States not only put on quite a show, it put to rest whispers that a team full of superstars wouldn't work together.

Team USA Working In Perfect Harmony

Usually, a team needs a few months to develop a personality. But this USA Basketball team isn't your ordinary squad.

In two games at the FIBA Americas Championship, Team USA has taken on the personality of a club that thinks pass first and shoot second, plays ferocious defense and has had its superstar players sacrifice parts of their individual games and blend in.

Did you think Kobe Bryant would be talking about his defense before his scoring? Do you believe Jason Kidd would have attempted one shot in two games? Would you have guessed that Mike Miller, Michael Redd and Chauncey Billups would be happy coming off the bench?

But that has been the case. Team USA is a happy 2-0 club entering today's nationally televised Group B pool play game at noon against Canada at the Thomas & Mack Center (ESPN2, Cable 31).
